The city of Kirkwood, population approximately 27,500, is located about fifteen miles west of St. Louis. Known as the “Queen of the St. Louis Suburbs,” it was established in 1853 and is known for its hometown charm and community pride. The railroad has been an intrinsic part of Kirkwood’s history, beginning with its status as a commuter suburb of St. Louis in the late 1800s.Kirkwood enjoys a seasonal climate, with moderate summertime temperatures reaching into the low 90’s and wintertime lows dropping into the 20’s with occasional snowfall. No matter what the season, Kirkwood is beautiful year-round and has plenty to offer for residents and visitors alike.
Kirkwood’s downtown business district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the site of the historic train station built in 1953. It is still in use today and is a daily stop for Amtrak passenger trains. The downtown area is also home to the city’s Farmers’ Market, as well as over three hundred locally owned retail shops and businesses.
Opportunities for outdoor activities abound in Kirkwood. The Kirkwood Parks System is made up of thirteen parks ranging in size from small neighborhood parks to the 134-acre Emmenegger Nature Park, offering picnicking and numerous nature trails with views of the scenic Meramec River. Kirkwood Park is the site of the Kirkwood Aquatic Center and Kirkwood Ice Arena. It offers year-round picnicking and fishing, as well as an outdoor amphitheater, softball fields, tennis and handball courts, horseshoe pits and shuffleboard courts, and a playground and spray fountain. With something for everyone, it’s a great place to spend a fun and relaxing day with family and friends.
Kirkwood is also conveniently located to the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and within a half-hour drive of most St. Louis attractions and venues.
